The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) has urged landlords to not require a deposit or top-up payment from NSFAS-funded students.

This comes just after NSFAS been given reports about some accommodation companies who require NSFAS-funded students to pay a deposit or top-up payment in order to get entry to the approved private accommodation.

"NSFAS reminds accommodation vendors on the obligatory conditions, as furnished by the Standardised Fixed-Term Lease Arrangement between the private accommodation providers and NSFAS funded students," NSFAS reported in an announcement on Thursday.

The Standardised Fixed-Term Lease Agreement states which the rent is going to be paid month-to-month towards the accommodation company (lessor) by NSFAS, on behalf with the lessee (NSFAS funded student), in accordance with the NSFAS terms and conditions for private accommodation providers’ participation on the student accommodation portal.

"The lessor may not call for or allow the lessee to pay a deposit, top-up payments, or another forms of payment into the lessor, or another person in reference to this agreement, including payment of lease, when awaiting payment from NSFAS. The lessor shall have no recourse against the lessee for any default while in the payment of rent by click here NSFAS," the arrangement reads.

The NSFAS terms and conditions for private accommodation providers’ participation on the student accommodation portal also states that: "Where the NSFAS-funded student is defunded due to an incorrect selection by NSFAS, the student won't be accountable for payment of any arrear rent towards the accommodation company, up until more info eventually the date of being defunded."
